Contaminated Land and Groundwater
Our experience of contaminated sites dates back thirty years and passes through the full history of this emerging discipline. We have advised on hundreds of contaminated or potentially contaminated sites. We develop realistic solutions based on sound engineering practice, enabling economically viable development. We have advised on the re-development of numerous coal mines including both deep mining and opencast sites. These have included the assessment of spoil for combustibility and feasibility studies for coal washing operations for secondary recovery in Lancashire and Scotland. Pit head sites have been assessed in Lancashire, North Wales, Nottinghamshire and Staffordshire. We have undertaken a forensic investigation to determine likely causes of salmonid fish mortality due to leachate from Civil Engineering works in Scotland. This involved detailed research from our own archives, un-published data from the BGS and other sources. Peter Cowsill Limited has assessed many sites in close proximity to surface waters including four sites where materials above hazardous waste thresholds have been identified and where streams ran under or adjacent to the sites. We have managed an investigation for radio nucleids on behalf of the former British Aerospace in a former industrial waste site where radio active paints were suspected. We have investigated numerous former railway sites for geotechnical and environmental factors. We have extensive experience of land affected by metaliferous mining including the ore fields of North Wales and Derbyshire, including remediation of sites for dwellings that had been contaminated by lead, zinc and arsenic. Our clients include prestigious companies such as British Aerospace, major developers such as Morston Assets, public sector bodies such as councils and statutory undertakers. |
